Australia Receives New MC-55A Peregrine Electronic Warfare Aircraft

Australia has taken delivery of another MC-55A Peregrine, marking a significant step forward in the Royal Australian Air Force's efforts to expand its intelligence, surveillance, and electronic warfare capabilities.

The aircraft arrived in Australia following testing and modification work in the United States and is expected to play a key role in providing the Australian Defence Force with advanced intelligence gathering and electronic support capabilities.

The MC-55A program is one of the most secretive projects currently underway within the RAAF and is designed to provide Australia with a capability not previously available in its air fleet.

A New Capability for the RAAF

Based on the Gulfstream G550 business jet, the MC-55A Peregrine has been heavily modified to perform intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare missions.

While many details surrounding the aircraft remain classified, the platform is expected to be capable of intercepting and analysing communications, locating radar emissions, gathering electronic intelligence, and supporting military operations across the Indo Pacific region.

The aircraft will work alongside other Australian intelligence and surveillance assets, including the E-7A Wedgetail, P-8A Poseidon, and MQ-4C Triton, helping build a more connected and capable intelligence network for the Australian Defence Force.

Australia first announced plans to acquire the MC-55A under Project Air 555 in an effort to replace and significantly expand capabilities previously provided by the AP-3C Orion electronic surveillance fleet.

The program has experienced delays over recent years as the aircraft underwent extensive modifications and testing in the United States.

Unlike a standard business jet, the MC-55A requires the integration of highly specialised mission systems, sensors, communications equipment, and electronic warfare technology, making it one of the most complex aircraft projects currently being delivered to the RAAF.

Despite the delays, defence officials have consistently described the aircraft as a critical capability for future operations.

Expanding Australia's Intelligence Reach.

The arrival of the aircraft comes at a time when Australia is investing heavily in intelligence and long range military capabilities.

The 2024 National Defence Strategy placed a strong emphasis on improving the Australian Defence Force's ability to detect, track, and understand potential threats across the Indo Pacific.

Aircraft such as the MC-55A are expected to play an important role in achieving that goal.

Operating at high altitude and over long distances, the Peregrine will be capable of gathering information across vast areas while supporting both Australian and allied military operations.

Its ability to collect electronic intelligence could prove particularly valuable in an increasingly contested regional environment where understanding an adversary's communications and radar networks is becoming more important than ever.

The Royal Australian Air Force is expected to eventually operate a fleet of four MC-55A Peregrines.

As additional aircraft arrive and crews complete training, the capability will gradually become integrated into Australia's broader intelligence and surveillance network.
