Australia Deploys Surveillance Aircraft to Gulf Amid Iran Conflict

The Australian government has announced the deployment of a Royal Australian Air Force surveillance aircraft to the Middle East as tensions continue to escalate in the region following strikes involving Iran and allied forces.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that a Boeing E‑7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft will be sent to the Arabian Gulf region along with approximately 85 Australian Defence Force personnel.

The deployment is expected to last around four weeks and will focus on monitoring airspace and supporting defensive operations.

According to Australian officials, the mission is strictly defensive and designed to help protect civilians, international airspace, and allied nations in the Gulf region.

The aircraft will provide long range radar surveillance and battle management capabilities, helping detect aircraft, drones, and missiles over large areas.

The deployment follows requests from partners in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, as Iranian missile and drone attacks have targeted several Gulf states in recent weeks amid the widening conflict in the Middle East.

Australia has also confirmed it will provide advanced medium range air-to-air missiles to regional partners to help strengthen air defence capabilities.

Australia will not deploy ground combat troops or participate in offensive strikes against Iran.

The government says the move is partly aimed at safeguarding Australian citizens living in the Middle East, with an estimated over 100,000 Australians currently in the region, including around 24,000 in the UAE.

The deployment comes as the Australian government also works to assist citizens wishing to leave the region as the conflict continues to disrupt air travel and regional security.

The E-7A Wedgetail, based on a modified Boeing 737 airframe, is one of the most advanced airborne command and control aircraft in the world.

It provides the Australian Defence Force with the ability to coordinate air, sea, and land operations in real time using its powerful radar and communications systems.

Defence officials say the deployment demonstrates Australia’s commitment to supporting allies and maintaining stability in a region critical to global trade and security.
