The Australian Army has taken delivery of the first three locally built K9 self-propelled howitzers, marking a major milestone in the nation’s defence modernisation and sovereign industrial capability.

The howitzers part of the LAND 8116 program were produced at the Hanwha Armoured Vehicle Centre of Excellence in Victoria. Officials described the delivery as a key step toward strengthening the country’s artillery and long-range firepower, as well as boosting local defence manufacturing.

The K9 is a 155 mm self-propelled artillery system designed for rapid, long range fire support.

Mounted on a tracked chassis, it is capable of firing a wide range of ammunition and is noted for improved mobility, protection, and accuracy compared with older towed artillery.

Defence representatives said the first three units will undergo final testing, integration with Army systems, and specialist crew training before entering full operational service.

The delivery of these first three K9s represents both a significant upgrade in capability for the Australian Defence Force and a growing sovereign industrial base, a Department of Defence spokesperson said.

These vehicles will enhance our ability to provide responsive, effective fire support during operations and exercises.

The acquisition of K9 artillery systems forms part of a broader effort to modernise Australia’s land combat capabilities, complementing other vehicle and armoured platforms already in service.

The tracked design allows the K9 to move with armoured formations, delivering firepower where and when it is needed.

Military analysts also note the significance of building the systems domestically, supporting Australian industry and creating jobs in advanced manufacturing and defence engineering.

Australia’s LAND 8116 program will see additional K9 howitzers and associated ammunition resupply vehicles delivered over the next several years.

Defence officials expect the fleet to be progressively integrated into Army units capable of supporting continental defence, coalition operations, and training within the region.

The local build program is one of several major defence industrial investments currently underway, reflecting Canberra’s focus on enhancing both capability and sovereign production in key military systems.
