China Expands Military Support to Iran Amid Escalation After U.S. Strikes

China has been linked to an intensification of military cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, including negotiations over advanced weapons systems, as tensions in the Middle East escalate following recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iranian targets.

Reports indicate that Beijing is in discussions with Tehran over the potential sale of advanced CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missiles, a significant upgrade to Iran’s coastal strike capabilities.

The CM-302 has a range of roughly 290 kilometres and is designed to fly low and fast, complicating defence efforts by ships and potentially posing a threat to major naval assets in the region.

The deal, if finalized, would mark one of the most significant Chinese-Iranian arms negotiations in decades and could strengthen Tehran’s ability to deter foreign naval power.

In addition to missile talks, multiple open source reports suggest that Iran has already received Chinese military equipment including kamikaze drones and air defence systems such as the HQ-16 and HQ-17AE, which could provide Tehran with enhanced aerial defence and strike capabilities.

While official acknowledgments of such deliveries are limited, defence analysts say these developments reflect a broader deepening of China-Iran military ties.

The reported increase in Chinese support comes as the United States and Israel conducted a major military operation against Iranian targets late last month, deploying cruise missiles, fighter aircraft and attack drones in what U.S. military officials described as a focused campaign against Iranian military infrastructure.

That offensive has sharply raised regional tensions and drawn international reactions, including from Beijing.

China’s foreign ministry has publicly condemned the strikes by the U.S. and Israel, describing them as “unacceptable” and urging an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic engagement.

Chinese officials have called for respect for Iran’s sovereignty and pressed for dialogue as a means of preventing further escalation.

U.S. officials have not confirmed the details of specific weapons transfers, and China has denied direct involvement in certain reported deals.

However, the prospect of advanced weapons sales including the potential CM-302 missile agreement would be likely to draw international scrutiny given existing United Nations arms embargoes and sanctions regimes targeting Iranian military procurement.

Experts say that any significant expansion of China’s role in supplying sophisticated weapons to Iran could further complicate U.S. and allied efforts to contain Iran’s military programs, potentially reshaping regional balance and deterrence calculations in the Gulf and beyond.
