The UK government has confirmed that for 2026 the Royal Navy will have only six frigates in service, with just three assessed as ready for deployment.

Once regarded as one of the most powerful naval forces in the world, the Royal Navy is struggling to maintain that reputation as it faces persistent challenges related to manpower shortages and budgetary pressures.

These issues have continued to affect fleet readiness and overall operational capability.

As of 2026, the Royal Navy’s combat fleet is expected to consist of one operational aircraft carrier, six destroyers, between three and six frigates, and a fleet of submarines forming the backbone of the UK’s maritime deterrence and strike capability.

Growing concern has been raised over the United Kingdom’s ability to defend its interests and meet its global commitments, particularly as the Royal Navy is not the only branch of the Armed Forces experiencing sustained difficulties with funding and personnel levels.
