Colombia's new Gripens will be replacing their 40-year-old IAI Kfir multirole combat aircraft from Isreal. The Gripen is a multirole aircraft as well and become more popular for nations in the past 2 years with multiple countries choosing the Swedish jet over the US F-35. Even nations like Canada are reconsidering it's purchases of 88 F-35As from the United States for Sweden's Gripen.

With tensions rising between the United States and South American nations most are looking elsewhere for military equipment to cut down on US reliance. This increase in cutting down United States reliance is not just fixed to South America, many nations like Canada, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland have dropped the F-35 for other aircraft like the Gripen.

Some believe this is linked to the Trump admiration's hostility to multiple nations causing untrust and creating a cut in US reliance. Some claim it's simply countries looking for more options.
